Powder Coated Finishes: The Key of Proper Maintenance

Posted on: September 17th, 2018 by byersbushblog

Would you want to extend the life of your powder coated products? The key is to understand how to properly care for it using the right maintenance procedures. Considering how exposed to environmental conditions the products can be, it would be a good way to make sure that your money is spent wisely. Let’s take a look at the proper maintenance of powder coated finishes.

Exposure to Water and Sun

Powder coating finishes that are exposed to the outdoor environment can be victimized by water (especially salt water) and ultraviolet light. These are the two most common factors that can drastically deteriorate the integrity of almost any product. To protect the powder coated products it is important always clean it with the appropriate materials to maintain the protective finish and decorative value.

How do you do it? There are many options on how this can be achieved including using mere soap and water. Powder coating maintenance is designed to ensure that the service life of the product including its finish is prolonged. By using proper maintenance procedures you may also be able to avoid costly repair and replacement of your products.

Coated Finish

Harsh chemicals and solvents have the ability to get through the coated finish and damage the underlying material. When the damage occurs, fading, staining, and failure becomes accelerated. To preserve the quality of the coated finish, avoid harsh commercial cleaners and keep a record of the maintenance work that has been done. By doing maintenance consistently and properly, the coated finish of the product can be preserved correctly and can function as it is expected to perform.

What do you need to know about colors? Just like gas, coating also no longer has any lead content. What does this mean? The absence of lead and similar heavy materials in the formulation can make the coat fade and stain comparatively worse that is did before. Choose powder coating colors that are appropriate for outdoor use if the application is for the outdoors. It helps guarantee better UV protection, hence, reduced possibility of staining and fading.

Pressure Washer

It is suggested that the easiest and perhaps most effective way to clean and maintain the coated surfaces of outdoor materials is with the use of pressure washers. To go a step further, use filtered water combined with lower pressure. Mild detergent can also be used as long as there is no chlorine content.

Extremely strong pressure may damage the metal surface including the finish. Also take note of the direction of the wind because the unfiltered water can cause stains on other products. You do not want to add more problems to what you currently have.

Mild Soap and Water

If you do not have a pressure washer, you can use a combination of cloth or soft brush together with mild soap in very warm water. This can break down the usual stains and do not leave scum. Cleaning should be done weekly or bi-weekly at the very least.

Why shouldn’t you use commercial cleaning solutions? Organic polymer based finish can be negative impacted. This means that premature loss of gloss, color fading, and cracking can begin to manifest. This will be further degraded as the product is exposed to weathering conditions.

Will waxing help? Yes, it can provide additional level of protection for the finished surfaces. Apply a light coat of high grade and non-abrasive car wax that has UV blocker or inhibitors to protect the finish and material. Stay away from compound waxes that have abrasives. Wipe off the residual wax that may remain.

It does not end when the material comes out of the coating system process. You still need to exert effort to maintain its beauty, durability, and consistency. This can only be done with proper maintenance of the powder coated finish.
